The Benefits of Essential Oils in Topical Remedies

12-3-2020 | When I share the benefits of the wonderful blend of essential oils  in CALIRUB, I always speak about terprenes. Going down that rabbit hole leads to volumes of information that Chiropractors, Herbalists, Naturopaths, Massage Therapists use every day to help clients overcome pain, promote relaxation, and prevent skin conditions. Indulge me for a few moments while attempt to make this simple.

Calirub Topicals contain 10 organic essential oils. Many of our products also contain CBD from Full Spectrum Hemp. This combination of whole plant extracts and essential oils is bursting with terpenes. Terpenes create the aroma of the plant and are found in plant resins. These resins also protect plants by killing bacteria and fungi. These properties are well known among plant experts and folk medicine aficionados have used them to make natural remedies for generations.

Alternative Healing and Science are Sharing Success

Pharmaceutical science is investigating plant resin remedies for healing also, in fact, new double-blind studies have experimented with anti-inflammatory and anti- microbial properties of plants. This pursuit has become increasingly popular in the scientific world. It seems that every medical discipline wants to mine the plant world for that next miracle cure.

According to studies done in 2011, pine resins and associated terpenes were proven to kill bacteria and fungus, including MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus). Scientists proved that infected wounds healed completely using a home-made Norwegian pine resin salve made from spruce trees (Picea abies.) Researchers documented the antimicrobial activity of the resin salve and provided objective evidence of its properties. Read the study done by the National Institute of Health. *You can find the reference to these studies and others at the end of this article.

Plant Based Healing Benefits Are Now Official

When I think about the beneficial ingredients in CALIRUB, I need to mention the Bees Wax, another key ingredient I add to our topicals. Studies are ongoing to prove its effectiveness in healing bruises, inflammation and burns. Researchers investigate beeswax too! More studies are needed but so far they have shown antimicrobic effectiveness of beeswax against Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella enterica, Candida albicans and Aspergillus niger; these effects are magnified with other natural products such as honey or olive oil. There it is, the” entourage effect”, the cooperation of elements to create a stronger effect.

When our mothers and grandmothers heal us with home remedies, researchers call it “anecdotal evidence”. When a scientific paper is written on the benefit of the same remedy, it gains  ”proven efficacy” status. Although I can’t  officially say anything medically wonderful will happen if you massage an essential oil salve into your tired body, we both know that it will help you feel better.

CALIRUB Contains A Unique Combination of Ingredients

Before I get ahead of myself, I want to list of our ingredients and  tell you about the well-known terpenes of CALIRUB so you can understand the power of CALIRUB and the positive effects the ingredients create together.

I’ve added, CBD from lab tested full spectrum hemp and extra virgin olive oil, USDA Certified Beeswax, USDA Certified Lavandin, USDA Certified Lemongrass, USDA Certified Sweet Orange, USDA Certified Scotch Pine, USDA Certified Patchouli, USDA Certified Clove Bud, Organic Gardenia Enfleurage, Wildcrafted Allspice, Wildcrafted Bay West Indies, Wildcrafted Elemi.

Each ingredient shares important terpenes with Full Spectrum Hemp. Because each ingredient includes one or more of each of these terpenes, the ability of our salve to heal aches, pains and prevent skin infections is magnified.

  • Limolene, Eucalyptol, Linalool, Nerolidol,
  • Alpha-Humulene, A-Bulnesene, A-Guinane,
  • B-Caryophyllene, Aciphyllene, Pinene, Alpha-Humulene,
  • A-Bulnesene, Aciphyllene, Seychellene, B-Patchoulene,
  • Myrcene, caryophyllene, peripheral endocannabinoid system

The Full Spectrum Hemp contains all these terpenes. Most of these terpenes have powerful anti-bacterial effects. Some fight both bacteria, fungi, and viruses. A few of the terpenes in our essential oils promote muscle relaxation.

How a Topical Ointment Massage Can Reduce Pain

Massaging a topical ointment into your skin can and does help the absorption and although skin has a particularly low absorption rate for cannabinoids, (CBD) when applied liberally, CBD is permeable to the skin through its pores. It will also migrate into the peripheral cannabinoid network found in nerves. It will not be absorbed directly into your blood stream but nevertheless will have a relaxing effect when applied topically.

Many of the terpenes in the essential oils found in CALIRUB,  have a relaxation qualities of their own and those terpenes will enhance the effect of the CBD. Each essential oil is chiefly fat-soluble and easily absorbed into the skin.  Additionally, our oil glands secrete sebum that helps essential oils to dissolve. They then pass into a deeper layer of skin from where they are carried by the lymph glands and blood vessels to the peripheral nerves.

Aromatherapy and Massage is the Perfect Combination

If you’re dreaming of a relaxing massage, imagine a heavenly scent wafting over you as you let go of all your tension. Just the aroma of therapeutic plant oils creates benefits. I’m not an aromatherapy expert, but I do know that today’s science is revealing some benefits.  Brent A. Bauer, M.D. a writer at mayoclinic.org has said studies are rare but he adds…” However, some studies have shown that aromatherapy might have health benefits, including:

  • Relief from anxiety and depression
  • Improved quality of life, particularly for people with chronic health conditions
  • Improved sleep

Smaller studies suggest that aromatherapy with lavender oil may help:

  • Reduce pain for people with osteoarthritis of the knee
  • Improve quality of life for people with dementia
  • Reduce pain for people with kidney stones

I’ve only scratched the surface on the perfume value of CALIRUB. I studied perfumery and I have a lot to say…in another post for sure. What makes our formula a superior tool to put into your first-aid kit and keep in your medicine cabinet when you need some relief? All of the above!
